Use voles' appetites to their disadvantage

Voles , regrettably , moved into my garden about 15 long time ago . Most of my genus Hosta were devoured before I see what was go on . My pachysandra was interpenetrate with burrow , and the voles even went so far as to take out a cherry Stan Laurel and a young Nipponese maple . A result that I have had success with is to fetch in plant know to be poisonous , such as hellebores ( Helleborusspp . and cvs . , USDA Hardiness Zones 4–9 ) , monkshood ( Aconitumspp . and cvs . , Zones 3–8 ) , bleeding affection ( Dicentraspp . and cvs . , Zones 3–9 ) , lily - of - the - valley ( Convallaria majalisspp . and cvs . , Zones 2–7 ) , mayapple ( Podophyllumspp . , Zones 3–9 ) , and daffodils ( Narcissusspp . and cvs . , Zones 3–9 ) . I embed these in drifts to gird areas planted with the tasty , more vulnerable plant . Also , when I foreshorten back spent foliage from the toxic plant , I blend the cuttings with former leaves from the Wood , chop it all together using my lawn mower , and dig it into new bed or employ it as light mulch.—Mary Bowe , Richboro , Pennsylvania
