Gardening in a dry climate without sacrificing beauty
Today ’s pic fall from Stephen Katcher .
I am save to share some impression of my garden in Studio City , California . I dwell with my married woman of twenty years , our two daughters , age 19 and 12 , and our two dogs . We ’ve lived here since 2004 , and what was a passing interest in native and drought - tolerant landscaping became a rage in the great drought we had in California for many years .
Our home is a easy midcentury distinctive of the period , but withlimited space for horticulture . We pulled up the lawn out front yr ago and picked works that could cover a south - facing exposure and were better adapted to our Zone 9b mood .

Over the long time I ’ve been drawn to chapparal plants , and you ’ll find in my garden Mediterranean , South African , Peruvian , and especially Australian and Californian native plants . I love succulents and bulbs , so you ’ll find those tucked around here and there too . I also appreciate interesting barks and forms , and so I get distracted by those from time to sentence .
focus on aboriginal and drought - tolerant landscaping does not imply sacrificing beauty ! There ’s lots to love here , with plash of lustrous orange tree from the native California poppy ( Eschscholziacalifornica , annual ) .
Five - spot ( Nemophilamaculata ) is another yearly plantnative to California .

A Meyer Citrus limon ( Citrus×meyeri , zone 8–11 ) in blush , with fruit visible in the ground .
A variegated genus Euphorbia ( probablyEuphorbiacharacias‘Tasmanian Tiger ’ , Zones 7–10 ) shows off in front of a fragrant lavender ( Lavandulasp . , Zones 5–10 ) .
AnArbutusmarina(Zones 9–11 ) Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree with someUrgineamaritima(Zones 8–11 ) , succulents , Billie Jean King protea ( Proteacynaroides , Zones 9–12 ) , and plenty of California poppy .

grow flower buds on the king protea .
California poppiesbloom away in a mix of various foliation and forms .
The drab - green root word of thecactusCereusperuvianus(Zones 9–11 ) are always attractive , but when the tremendous white flowers open , it is unfeignedly over the top !

The bloom on theCereusperuvianusare followed by these red fruits .
Ahummingbirdnest , complete with two oh - so - tiny eggs !
