Dreaming of flowery days to come
Today we ’re confab Betsy Keith ’s garden .
I am a retired teacher who has love doing lots of snap - up dividing and rearrange of my garden in the preceding two eld . As I eagerly await the arrival of spring here in Marietta , Georgia , I have meditate back on some of the seasonal highlights from the preceding twelvemonth . At this time of year , I necessitate to assure myself that there really will be a salvo of colouring in the landscape painting in the near future .
All is at rest now , but the daffodils will be take up their cheery show shortly . This is the varietyNarcissus‘Sir Winston Churchill ’ ( Zones 5–8 ) .

Here in the gay South , we enjoy our pansies and violas(Viola× wittrockiana , cool - season one-year ) all declination , wintertime , and spring . These are the ‘ Cool Wave ’ pansies , which form clumps up to 2 feet wide .
As outpouring gives way to early summer , the hydrangea put on their inimitable show in pinks , whites , and blues . I have ‘ Annabelle’(Hydrangea arborescens‘Annabelle ’ , Zones 3–9 ) , ‘ Endless Summer ’ in both dismal and pink , ‘ Penny Mac ’ , ‘ Bloomstruck ’ , ‘ Masja ’ , ‘ Wedding Gown ’ , ‘ Queen ’s Lace ’ , ‘ Merritt ’s Pride ’ , ‘ Merritt Supreme ’ , and ‘ Summer Crush ’ ( smorgasbord ofHydrangea macrophylla , Zones 5–9 ) .
‘ Endless Summer ’ hydrangeas in grim direct contrast nicely with thehostasunder a vitex tree(Vitexagnus - castus , Zones 6–9 ) .

Another early summer delight is the cheery ‘ Chicago Gold Strike ’ daylilies(Hemerocallis‘Chicago Gold Strike ’ , Zones 3–9 ) that greet guests as they insert the side garden . Typically these bloom from June 1 until late July . They contrast nicely with the ‘ Needlepoint ’ holly(Ilexcornuta‘Needlepoint ’ , Zones 7–9 ) that they are in front of and reverberate the gold colour of theChamaecyparispisifera‘Aurea ’ nearby .
Becky daisies(Leucanthemum× superbum‘Becky ’ , Zones 5–8 ) and ‘ Moonbeam ’ coreopsis(Coreopsisverticillata‘Moonbeam ’ , Zones 4–9 ) form a color replication at the entering to the front garden . Both bloom unceasingly all summer . The Becky daisies are an excellentcut flower , lasting two workweek in a vase if cut when they first open . They have also stay on standing without staking even through hurricane - force wind . They are hard to beat !
Yellow lilies(Liliumhybrid , Zones 4–9 ) put on quite a show for the boo feeding nearby . They reach over 6 feet marvellous at maturity and flower for about three hebdomad . They bloom at the same time as the vitex tree , which supply a feast for the bees .

The garden reaches its summertime peak when the vitex trees are in their initial full bloom along with the ‘ Disco Belle ’ hibiscus(Hibiscusmoscheutos‘Disco Belle ’ , Zones 4–9 ) , roses , Peruvian daffodils(Hymenocallisfestalis , Zones 8–10 ) , hydrangeas , hostas in pots , red flame nettle for depth , and white SunPatiens(Impatienshawkeri , yearly ) , which glow both twenty-four hour period and dark .
The view from my kitchen window shows an Orienpet lily(Liliumhybrid , perhaps ‘ Black Beauty ’ , Zones 3–8 ) framing the treeform ‘ spotlight ’ hydrangea(Hydrangea paniculata‘Limelight ’ , zone 3–8 ) as it come into bloom of youth . My coffee sample even better when I get to enjoy newly open up lilies and rosiness right outside the window . VariegatedJapanese iris(Iris ensata‘Variegata ’ , Zones 5–9 ) , white SunPatiens , and a duo types of green and white caladiums(Caladiumhybrids , Zones 9–10 or as yearly or supply ship medulla oblongata ) echo the Edward Douglas White Jr. of the ‘ Limelight ’ and are easily seeable at night .
A close - up of the west bed testify the ‘ Disco Belle ’ hibiscus in full bloom as well as the Peruvian daffodils , carmine coleus , ‘ David ’ phlox(Phloxpaniculata‘David ’ , Zones 4–8 ) , SunPatiens , and blue agapanthus(Agapanthushybrid , Zones 8–10 ) . The back of the border features papyrus(Cyperusinvolucratus , Zones 8–12 ) , which reaches over 6 feet by the death of the summer . A coral barque maple(Acerpalmatum‘Sango Kaku ’ , Zones 5–9 ) adds wonderfultextureand color all season .

One of my first undertaking after retirement was to divide my ‘ Pee Dee Gold Ingot ’ liriope(Liriopemuscari‘Pee Dee Gold Ingot ’ , Zones 6–10 ) and extend the mete of the path on the side G . A ‘ Limelight ’ hydrangea is flanked by ‘ Miss Muffet’caladiumson one side , and another one has ‘ Raspberry Moon ’ caladiums at its base , reverberate the prime in the tummy . A ‘ Florida Sunshine ’ anise(Illiciumparviflorum‘Florida Sunshine ’ , Zones 6–9 ) continues the prosperous theme . Purple ‘ Rozanne ’ geraniums(Geranium‘Rozanne ’ , Zones 5–9 ) bloom continuously from spring to a hard icing .
