The cheeriest flowers of the season

Today we ’re point all the way to Nina Žunić ’s garden on Hvar , Croatia , which Nina calls the gay island of Croatia , to enjoy some beautiful flowering bulb .

Hvar is across the Adriatic Sea from Italy and has a warm , sunny , Mediterranean climate , which is where many of our most popular outpouring - flowering bulbs arise . Many bulbs , such as tulips and Narcissus pseudonarcissus , bloom so early and then go abeyant because they come in from a mood where there is very trivial rain in the summer , so they retreat down to their bulbs to wait out the dry part of the twelvemonth . If your bulb are n’t thriving in your home garden , taste to give them lots of sun , and site them where they will be able to stay as dry as potential during their summer dormancy .

bright xanthous crocus ( Crocussp . ) are always one of the first incandescent lamp to bloom , and they welcome the give in such a cheerful way !

crocus come in a wide reach of colors and pattern — and I ’m moderately certain it is impossible to have too many of them .

Freesias hail from another part of the world with dry summer : South Africa . They are intensely fragrant , and New hybrids come in a wide range of colors . If you live in an arena with very mild winter ( around Zone 9 and warm , though I have had them come through mild winter in Zone 7 ) , you may plant the bulbs in the fall for bounce bloom . In colder climate , plant them in the leap .

The classical spring bulb — tulips ! I love how they are growing here between rocks , which is similar to the conditions their uncivilized ascendent would have experienced in their native scope .

It ’s voiceless to go wrong with the classic , timeless knockout of huge , ruddy tulips . Happy springtime , everyone !
