Epimedium – Bishop’s Hat, Barrenwort
After register the description of the Epimedium by Miss M. R. Case in “ Horticulture , ” we have adjudicate to vacate all hopes of describing this dainty flush in our own crude words . She writes :
“ Blossoming under a big Oak , where Maidenhair and Dicksonia ferns grow to perfection , is a dainty herb from Japan bed as the Bishop ’s Hat , from the square , vapid shape of its blossoms . “ The efflorescence are in light sprays which fork off from the main stem cubic decimeter inches below where the main stem divide into the three sprays which bear the leave . They come in buff or soft yellow , mauve and white . The one which has done the good at Hillcrest , Epimedium macranthum , pay the bishop a yellow lining to his morose crimson hat . It is well arranged for his grace ’s consolation , as under the straight , flat lid is a lilliputian pileus to keep back it well in position . It is so pretty a chapeau that we hope it is in the rite of the flowered macrocosm for it to be fag in the ceremonies of their service .
“ The loose spray of blossoms is 6 inch long from where it branches from the primary stem . The whole plant is more than a foot in superlative ; the single flower about the size of a dime bag . The pretty redbud are on the spray with the flowers .

“ The leaf are a soft yellow fleeceable , parallel vein and pointed at the apex . The main base divide into three spray for the leaves . The whole plant has an airy , strange and very pleasing effect . The old leaves persist on the stems through the Winter and have to be gather with the Spring litter from the gardens .
“ It should not be confused with the Bishop ’s Cap , Mitrewort or Mitella , which more intimately resemble the Tiarella or Foam Flower . His Grace , the Bishop , is well adorned in Puritan New England . ”
