A landscape architect shares his tricks for making tight spaces seem bigger

For me , the intent of landscape aim is to make an surround that ’s both wondrous to see and delightful to see . This environment is more easily realized where blank space is plentiful and selection are endless . In urban sites , however , space is special . So how , then , do you create the sport of mystery and discovery , the public security of purdah , the delight of visual intrigue , and the satisfaction of please the senses ? How can you divest these fiddling urban yards of that sense of limitation and confinement so many of them seem to convey ?

These are the head I ask myself when I moved to Brooklyn from the rolling fields of North Salem , New York . As a landscape painting intriguer arrive from the area , these were the challenge I confront .

A winding path creates a garden surprise

I adjudicate to get down , naturally enough , with my own 32- by 22 - foot garden ( Garden 1 , at mightily ) . Consisting of a central planting orbit surrounded on three side by a walkway , the garden seemed inactive and two - dimensional . Everything was visible at once , and consequently it seemed little and more modified — not as interesting and inviting as I wanted it to be .

I thought that if the garden could spread more gradually it would seem bigger by ply those welcome elements of surprise and find that overstate the pleasures of a garden . I also realized that if I put the planting area on the outer edges , with the living field toward the middle , I could generate more privacy and , at the same time , dilate the planting area . This , too , would heighten the sentience of spaciousness .

To do this , I built a bluestone way of life that wander out from the door to the patio , canopied by two major planting groups on either side . I place the patio more or less in the center of the grand , planting trees , shrubs , vines , and perennials on all four sides . Adjacent , I built a modest fish pool and a stonefaced barbecue .

Now , as you record the garden region , you get just a coup d’oeil of the pond and a portion of the terrace beyond , seen through the leafy overhang of trees and shrubs . It ’s only as you come after the winding path that the garden open up . As you push aside the last of the cascade leaf and step forward , you find yourself in a paved clarification , enveloped within leaves and flower . The impact is tangible .

Once on the patio , the barbeque and dining table suggest their own possibility , like summer eventide parties , candle - illuminate dinners , and breakfast with the birds . The pool , situated at the terrace ’s border , offer view of swank Pisces and water lilies , as well as the sound of gurgling pee . I used larger flora here to sieve nearby structures while frame scene into the tops of neighboring tree diagram ; this , too , seemed to expatiate the garden . I gave the patio an unpredictable edge by planting ground cover that blur the railway line , contributing to the sentience of graceful simpleness .

Dividing is more like multiplying

The next site I project ( Garden 2 ,   at correctly ) was also afflicted with what seemed like inbuilt limitations , though dissimilar from the single in my own garden . unwrap as a fish sports stadium , wasteland , and narrow , this second lot appear peculiarly uninviting and unusable .

To dole out with this problem , I created two clearly disjoined place . Most people tend to think that a small area divided becomes smaller still . Yet if it ’s done with a sensation of proportionality and with enough room pay to each area , dividing becomes more like multiplying — increase the perception of space as well as possible experiences .

I made the first outer space the largest , and ample enough for a salmagundi of outdoor activities , thus eliminating any sense of travail . The second space , seeable through an arbor , invite you forth . When you step into this garden , you ca n’t help but wonder what ’s back there .

To further enhance the sense of breakup , I excavated the second area , dropping it several in below the first . I also gave it an entirely different character from the front garden . The front sphere is formal in layout ; it ’s symmetric and made of bluestone with mortar joint and conjure brick planters . The rearward area , on the other hand , is free - form and loose . It , too , is pave with bluestone , but this prison term I set it on top of the soil , with brick randomly worked in . The layout is irregular and the bed are earth stratum . The built - in sandbox , belittled water garden , and profuseness of wildlife - attract plants ( for the birds , squirrels , butterflies , and dragonflies ) enhance the casual atmosphere .

These garden area are very different , yet together they create a I , which is crucial in maintain a sensation of place . The arbor , for deterrent example , both joins the areas and separate them . It helps make a visual roadblock while framing a scene into the garden and beyond , answer to set each field apart while inviting the visitant from one area into the other .

The use of goods and services of the same material — like brick and stone — also helps tie the two areas together , as does the repetition of the more dramatic plants . For example , the middle - catching decorative smoke and plants with variegated leaves repeat throughout the garden , create continuity . What was once a site seemingly without possible action is now a two - way garden offering countless experiences — all achieve through the precept of division .

Terracing adds dimension to a long, narrow space

divide by three work , too . Another site I designed ( Garden 3 , at aright ) was about 80 pes by 20 ft — quite expectant by urban standards , yet it seemed tiny and inaccessible . Part of the problem , as is often the case with small property , was in the inauspicious division of space . Two poorly placed cedar trees created a cramped patio area near the theater entrance , while an overgrown crab apple tree crowd out the rear portion of the garden .

The first affair I did was get rid of these tree diagram . But even when they were go , the website still seemed too confining . This was due to the extreme narrow margin of the lot in contrast to the height of the edifice . To reduce the inauspicious length - to - breadth ratio , I separate this caboodle into three separate areas . Because the railyard was very long and easily supported three areas , create three rooms would enhance interest and possibility . Moreover , because the yard rose noticeably toward the utmost expanse in the lawn ( where the black-tie water garden is now locate ) , terracing was a instinctive treatment here .

The surface area closest to the house features a redwood pack of cards that flows easy down to an knowledgeable patio that ’s stress by an informal weewee garden and graceful plantings . I separated this first space from the second one by installing a blanket spindle that permits an loose view into the second and third garden areas .

The second area is the big and adds considerably to the cubic yard ’s overall sensation of spaciousness . You move from an intimate yet plentiful deck and terrace area into a more roomy expanse that offer a view into still another chamber of the garden . This experience of motion , of enlargement through space , make the illusion of vastness .

The third area of this garden is elevate and severalise from the 2nd area by a low-pitched Edward Durell Stone wall . Proportion here is important . If too tall , the rampart would have the effect of a barrier , suppress forward move ; if too small , it would seem foolish and unnecessary . As it is , the wall annul the middle , carrying your vision into some remote full stop indeterminable because of the abundant plantings at the bum of the garden .

The semi - schematic water garden in the third field serve up several functions . An ornament in itself , the weewee garden model like a gem in its verdant environment , providing both visual and auditory interest , as well as masking street disturbance . The body of water garden also serves as a focal point , starting from the very front of the garden where it suck up your attention from the deck through the total sweep of the landscape painting .

Though filled with diversity , these three garden spaces are welded into one environment by two primary elements — the usance of stone throughout and the repetition of form . Stone planter on the left proportionality the dry - lay stone paries on the right and rearward , while the curve of the pergola , the rear retaining wall , the planter , and the piss garden helper integrate each domain into a ordered whole .

Curves and diagonals add intrigue

Creating division and supply enigma are not the only way to enlarge small-scale places . turn with line is also important . Because the shortest distance between two points is a straight line — visually as well as physically — when everything in a modest outer space is linear , we see everything at once . Our eyes do n’t traverse the duration of the product line , but go immediately to the end , withdraw no joy in the journey . The space seems to shrink as we directly see the whole garden at once .

weigh , for good example , this next urban landscape ( Garden 4 ,   at right ) . It was a dark , flat , two - dimensional rectangle , dead without interest . By building a curving wall that bear the raised bed and the water garden , I succeeded in doing away with that static , linear quality . Now , our attention is first swept along this curve but then leaps aside at various point to different views the garden offers .

aslant line can be used for the same effect . For example , a terrace laid diagonally to the length - width axis of rotation of a given area will pleasantly break up our customary axial orientation and help convey a greater sense of space . When using virgule , I endeavor to incorporate other elements within that predilection . I might , for instance , allow a portion of a keep paries to sweep out and postdate the slanted stock of the patio for some aloofness . Or I may come in an arbor vertical to the diagonal axis vertebra , thereby strengthen the diagonal focal point and anchoring it within the full distance .

Special elements pique interest

The use of detail is valuable in contribute depth and dimension to little places and can be include in a kind of way . Any factor that enhances our senses has the effect of blow up and prolonging our garden experience . body of water garden are idealistic for this , and I ’ve come to include them in many of my garden . Consider the delightful strait of cascading water , reflections on a placid syndicate , the colors and motion of swimming Pisces , and day- and nightblooming water system lilies . What other element offer up so much in so trivial space ?

Except , of path , industrial plant . compound well , planting groups can add vital force and spirit to a landscape painting . What ’s important here is that the plants have a perceivable kinship to one another , that they interact , visually , through the principle of musical harmony and direct contrast in obedience to their shape and texture . I was concerned when I first encountered these urban sites and the problems that came with them . I was worried I would n’t be able-bodied to create beautiful garden . After several years of finding solutions satisfying to both my clients and me , I am now convinced that there is no site — no matter how small — that can not be effectively transformed . If you have a tiny would - be garden , chances are it only awaits the software of a few of these principle before it , too , becomes a garden that gives you persistent pleasure .
