Foraging and Identifying Oregon Grape
Oregon Grape ( Mahonia spp . ) is native to Oregon ( hence the name ) and other western State .
It is in the barberry kinfolk and has briery leave standardized to Buddy Holly . It is sometimes called Oregon grapevine - holly , although it ’s not a grape or a Buddy Holly !
There are several different species of Oregon Grape , the tall and the gloomy seeming to be the most common .

The marvellous variety ( Mahonia aquifolium ) is what is most commonly used in yards for landscaping purposes , and we even have some in our thousand .
The humiliated mixed bag ( Mahonia nervosa ) can be found out in the woods fairly well as it tend to be more wild .
Oregon grape berry are not grapes nor do they taste anything like grapes . In fact , they are very tart , but edible withal . They ripen from late June through August , depending on your location .

The berries themselves actually look quite similar tojuniper Chuck Berry , which also have a whitish “ heyday ” coating .
Harvesting and Using Oregon Grape
The best way to apply the berry is to make jam , Proto-Indo European or wine-coloured . Anything where sugar is added ! I ’m thinking an Oregon Grapemeadwould be quite nice .
Even with the spiny leaves the berries come off their root word quite easily , which is nice . It did n’t take long for me to get a low bowl full .
Oregon grape is on the United Plant Saversplants to catch list , so care need to be take when harvesting . Never take the intact works and be mindful that you are leave enough for it to reproduce .

Medicinal Uses of Oregon Grape
Besides make comestible berries , Oregon Grape is also well known as a medicative plant .
It contains the chemical compound berberine , which is principally found in the roots and barque of the plant . Berberine has antimicrobial , antiviral , antifungal , and antibiotic properties .
Berberine is also the independent medicinal coupound find in goldenseal root , and Oregon grapevine root can be used likewise .

In the low wild variety you may pretty much only get berberine from the roots , but in the tall variety the stems are much gravid so you may shave off the bark to get at it . It has a noticeable icteric colour .
you’re able to employ the roots and stem to make a tea , tincture , crude infusion , orsalve .
If you do n’t live in westerly states or ca n’t seem to determine any wild Oregon Grape in your area , you could alwaysorder the rootage from Mountain Rose Herbs .

For now , though , I ’m choke to mean about what to do with these awesome berries !
There ’s a lot more where these came from , and I ’m thinking mayhap a jam . I would also love to play around with using the root word and stem in a tea or oil infusion for salve .
What a wonderful and extremely utile plant !
