Garden substructure
before this yr I had aplan , born of desperation , to exposit the planting infinite available in the garden . In the process I hope to make the garden more attractive . The first stagecoach was to change the credit line of the itinerary , that wasdonea month or two back . The next stage was to create a new seating area area . Actually this was a means to an end , the substantial next stage was to produce some new borders , but I needed a credible cause to do so first . There are those in my house that do n’t see “ cos more plants , innit ” as sufficient . Weird .
I wanted a circular terrace as I reckon that would look less conventional . I initially contrive to just corrupt a circular pavement kit , but those are quite expensive . After a bit of research on the interweb I decide to just use regular mansion brick and arrange in a worthy pattern .

I absent a circular patch of grass about 6′ across and levelled it out , which affect digging out quite a morsel of sandlike topsoil . As it turn out , I did not do a very good job of levelling .
I compact the ground just using the head teacher of the sledgehammer , then add together an inch or two of concrete .
Once that was dry I experimented with a few different brick arrangements . chop-chop bring in that the bricks were too big to make a skillful tight rophy nearer the centre , I split some of the bricks into thirds . After some discussion , I settled on a pattern then got officious desegregate up the mortar .

This is where I came a little unstuck . It became plain that the base was n’t as stratum as I think which meant a sight of mucking about with different depths of trench mortar to achieve a more - or - less flat finish . A very hot afternoon by and by , I had finished setting the brick in the desired pattern . It end up pretty circular , and pretty storey , a venial miracle considering I did it all by middle .
Next I made up a arenaceous howitzer commixture for the pointing which was simply brished into the interruption between the bricks .
The theory is that the wet in the atmosphere is sufficient to go down the mortar , but it has been so dry recently that I have conduct to giving it an casual sprayer with the hose . A distich of weeks later and it still does n’t seem to have set wholly hard – I ’m beginning to wonder if I did n’t use enough cement in the mix . I ’ll keep spraying and desire it ’ll be ok . Worst case , I ’ll have to re - do the pointing , teasing but not a big deal .

Now finally to the end - game , the digging of the new borders . I opted for a fairly constitutive curve , partly following the lineage of the new path . I removed the turf , stacking it out of the path , then mulching with good layer of home - made compost . As I was building this and tweeting nonsense about it , it became fuck as the Eye of Sauron . find fault a long trajectory and an umpteenth viewing of one of the LOTR movies .
I have n’t planted it out yet , that will hail shortly . To go with , it will be a multi-coloured collection of whatever plants I have left knocking about . I have several salvia , some hollyhock , some dahlia , a few shrubs , some other morsel and pieces . I can adapt as needed next spring when I recruit my next growing frenzy . My intention is to surround the seating area with plants so that it finger like sitting in the border . I also need to buy a suitable bistro set , and I believably demand a stepping stone from the route to the circle , a way across the border and through the planting .
So what next ? I originally think I might dig up the whole of the left side of the lawn , but that is possibly taking it too far . The next microscope stage then will be to create some more planting space along the line of the path . I ’m thinking some gracious bright geranium and perchance an archway with rose and clematis struggle up . That will have to wait till afterwards in the year , I think .

I ’ll be back in a twosome of months with an update .
