Here ’s what my new front - yard garden looks like . Kind of skimpy ? Well , that ’s OK . Plants grow and next year , and especially the year after that , this garden will look full and lush .
start from the left , here ’s what is institute in it . Those lighter coloured mounds at far left are‘Silver Mound ’ artemisia , a softly textured leaf flora . They only produce about a foot across and 10 inches tall , but they brighten up the plant around them and have a tremendous texture . This is a plant you just want to rival . Next to that , on the street side of the layer , are three‘Maestro ’ sedum . I love theAutumn Joy sedumin my other front garden , and want to sample one of the dark distort sedum . This plant has across-the-board leaves than Autumn Joy and a dark sorry - over-embellished - green foliage . Late in the summertime it should have pinkish , then darker imperial blooms that stay all winter .
Also on the street side are threeprairie dropseedgrasses ( Spororbolus heterolepsis ) . These are a compact grass know for its cilantro - same scent afterward in the season . Anchoring the turning point of the bottom are threeblack chokeberrybushes . These are a native bush that grows 3 to 5 pes tall and offers year - long looks as well as intellectual nourishment for bird . It currently has a pretty bloodless flower , which will by and by rick to a dark downhearted berry that birds screw ( seemingly , people can eat them , too , though I have get a line they need pile of sugar ) . In fall , the leaf turn a red purple that is sensational . This variety is called ‘ Autumn Magic ’ .

Mature front garden frames the house and yard. Also bees and butterflies loved it!
Going up the side of the bottom , above the shrub , are fiveRussian sageplants . We were very dry part of last summertime , and I noticed that Russian sage was about the only perennial that looked good all year . It has airy foliage and purple blooms . Next to the sage is a drift of fivewhite garden phlox(Phlox paniculata‘David ’ ) . Nestled behind the sedum near the phlox are 5blazing star(Liatrisspicata‘Kobold ’ ) . This is another native works , with showy , bottle - brush bloom in a dark lavender . It is supposed to attract butterflies and even hummingbird . Finally , toward the center of the bed , is a individual imperial salvia . This is the only “ onesie ” in the bed , and it ’s already in bloom of youth .
The one and a half inches of rain we had over the past two days will really facilitate the seam get established .
Update from 2018 : This garden grew to be one of the tolerate - out features of my Northfield garden . Here ’s a photo from September 2015 .
