Civil Society Organisations under Hivos East Africa ’s Women@Work Campaign and the Kenya Flower Council ( KFC ) polish off food for thought packages and fluid money transfers worth approximately Ksh8million to actor in select flower farm .

A total of 7,500 worker in the flower sector are set to receive the rations as a relief metre due to disruption of income as a consequence of COVID-19 pandemic . Hundreds of permanent workers were sent home on pay and unpaid leave during the month of March and April , while seasonal worker have been rendered jobless . Although most blossom farms , in recent weeks , have recalled their workers as export to various grocery store continue to cull up , many are still at home and unemployed . The heyday sub - sector employs over 200 , 000 workers employ directly on the farms across the country .

“ We have been implementing labor with the flower farm under our Women@Work programme - which advocates for sound workings condition for actor in horticulture . It is only prudent for us to run some support to the worker in this extraordinary period , ” said Hivos East Africa ’s Regional Director , Mendi Njonjo .

A survey by Hivos East Africa on the effects of Corana Virus on womanhood working in horticulture showed that bulk of workers were struggling to buy food and worried about release of income . Even as COVID-19 effects continue to ravage , Hivos believes that it ’s authoritative to include human right , such as protection of the vulnerable and respectfulness of human dignity to not only curtail the banquet of the virus but also cushion and safeguard women proletarian who stand to be the most affected by the pandemic .
