Hey GPODers ! Today we ’re getting a summertime update from Lee Miller ’s garden in Long Island ( check out her first submission : Long Island Garden Tour ) . She send over portion of photos and outstanding information , so I ’ll allow her take it away :
Welcome to my summertime garden ! I am a Long Island , New York , native , having grown up , and still lodge in in my puerility abode in the town of Sayville locate on the island ’s south shoring . horticulture since the age of five , and now in my mid-60 ’s , my never - ending passion of all things green keep to farm . As a retired educator I bulge a second life history doing what I have loved since childhood . Most of my days are spent in my element , live life as a landscape designer , garden coach , garden communicator , blogger atA Guide to Northeastern Gardeningand the author of five gardening books , each where I share my passion and noesis of horticulture . Over the years our once bare ground have transformed into a sanctuary my married man and I can enjoy . Join me for a circuit of my garden .
As mid - summertime rolls around , it is a wonderful time in my zona 7b garden as the third major round of blooms and interchange people of colour arrive about . It has been an especially banner class for hydrangea .

This old fashioned‘Nikko puritanical ’ hydrangea(Hydrangea macrophylla‘Nikko Blue ’ , Zones 6–9)is a knockout with its voluminous deep blue blooms which deepen in a more acidulous dirt . This variety of hydrangea prefer partial shade , grows to approximately five feet in tiptop and flower on the previous class ’s growth . I find that absent only the fade flowers after they flower to be best , as the plant thrives and blossom well with as little pruning as possible . If you feel the need to prune , do it immediately after flowering and do it sparingly .
Here is Endless Summer ® hydrangea(Hydrangea macrophylla‘Bailmer ’ , zone 4–8),which is a certain succeeder that bloom on the new maturation of the season and produces either pink , blue or over-embellished bloom depending on the pH of the stain . As you’re able to see , this plant displays all three potential colors with pinkish as the independent feature of speech . The shed that the bush is growing next tends to produce more pinkish bloom ( canonic stain ) , I also get to see some down in the mouth bloom ( acidulous soil ) and purple blooms too . Growing in zone 4 - 8 , Endless Summer ® hydrangea perform good with some partial shade and a somewhat moist , well - draining dirt .
Another later blooming hydrangea in the back island bed is Limelight Prime ® hydrangea(Hydrangea paniculata‘SMNHPPH ’ , Zones 3–8).It is starting to show off its green white blooms that turn to virginal white , then pink as the summertime shape up . It is joined by evergreens Hinoki cypress ‘ Compacta’(Chamaecyparisobtusa‘Compacta ’ , Zones 5–8)(back left ) , and Mugo pine(Pinusmugovar.pumilio , Zones 5–8)(back right ) . ‘ Limelight Prime ’ is an improved hybrid of ‘ Limelight ’ with darker leaves , a more compact use , and strong stems . It is hardy in USDA zones 3 - 8 , grows best in partial specter and strain a height of 4 - 6 feet improbable at maturity .

With the perfect combination of a milder wintertime , cooler spring and pot of rainfall , genus Echinacea is having a banner year as well . The blooms seem even more glorious that in the past tense and I am enjoying every moment ! This variety , ‘ Cheyenne Spirit’(Echinaceax ‘ Cheyenne Spirit ’ , geographical zone 4–9)has become a darling with its multicolor blooms all on one plant . aboriginal to the northeast and hardy in USDA zones 4 - 9 , this lulu enjoys full Sunday and a well - enfeeble stain . It is bee and butterfly well-disposed , deer tolerant and easy to grow and bloom in summer . Blooms start in summer and last until fall . Dried seeded player head are a kickshaw for birds .
The next stop is along the patio garden with echinacea PowWow ® Wild Berry(Echinacea purpurea‘PAS702917 ’ , Zones 4–9)with its splendiferous rosaceous - purple blooms on strong stalk . Hardy in USDA zones 4 - 9 , this beaut part blooming in late saltation to early summer and just keeps on gift . Its flowers are also bee and butterfly well-disposed and deer immune too .
Here is the genus Echinacea Pow Wow ‘ Wild Berry ’ accompanied by juniper ‘ Blue Star’(Juniperussquamata‘Blue Star ’ , Zones 4–9)in the patio border .

Spirea ‘ Candy Corn’(Spiraeajaponica‘NCSX1 ’ , Zones 4–8),balloon flower , and lamb ’s ear also join the mixing . This intercrossed balloon flower , ‘ Komachi’(Platycodon grandiflorus‘Komachi ’ , Zones 3–8),is the only one in which the heyday do not open but remain as puffy “ balloons ” which you may drink down when they are done flowering !
As we saunter around to the front of the property , the front island layer features display a mixing of depart foliage and colour , including evergreen , blossom bush , and perennials . Here we run into weeping Norway spruce(Piceaabies‘Pendula ’ , district 2–8)(in the backdrop ) with dwarf cryptomeria(Cryptomeriajaponica‘Globosa Nana ’ , Zones 5–7)(far left ) , genus Osmanthus ‘ Goshiki’(Osmanthus heterophyllus‘Goshiki ’ , geographical zone 6–9)and nanus Norway spruce(Piceaabies‘Pumila ’ , zona 2–8)(far right ) , Rock ‘ N Round ® ‘ Pure Joy ’ sedum(Sedumhybrid ‘ perfect Joy ’ , Zones 3–9)and genus Funka ‘ Gold Standard’(Hosta‘Gold Standard ’ , Zones 3–9).The sedum ‘ Pure Joy ’ will produce pallid pink bloom to bring in in the later part of the summer .
move around to the other side of the front island seam is a view of midget golden Anna ’s Magic Ball ® arborvitae(Thujaoccidentalis‘Anna van Vloten ’ , Zones 3–8),dwarf Japanese Andromeda ‘ Cavatine’(Pierisjaponica‘Cavatine ’ , Zones 5–7),dwarf Mugo pine , and hosta ‘ bragging Daddy’(Hosta‘Big pop ’ , Zones 3–9).Weeping blue atlas cedar(Cedrusatlantica‘Glauca Pendula ’ , Zones 6–9)in the backcloth . I get a spate of inquiries about the midget golden arborvitae , as it is something that is not figure often . Its petite size of just 2 - 3 feet in height stimulate it perfect for combining with other plantings .

Last , but not least is a foresightful horizon of the front lawn with a majestic sorry atlas cedarwood , which I brought home 28 old age ago at just 4 feet tall in the back seat of a Ford Probe , before finally buy a pickup truck for work . That tree now towers over thirty positive feet magniloquent and is joined by a 30 - year - previous weeping Japanese maple(Acerpalmatum dissectum‘Viridis ’ , Zones 5–9),which has now strain its maximum height of 8 foot with a cattle ranch of 12 feet . Along with its amazing lacing - bequeath foliage , its multi - cauline trunk adds an add dimension especially in winter as the snow cover its branch .
As the duty tour get along to an end , I hope you enjoyed your amble around my Long Island garden . A garden is a chancel , a place to ascertain solitude and repose , and it brings delight to those who encounter it . I trust the views brought you some joy too . As always … happy gardening !
