Last week ’s visit to Wave Hill Botanic Garden and Cultural Center just northerly of New York City in the Bronx inspired me so much , that I snapped rolls and roll of pic ( well , more like a USB movement full ) . Now that I ’ve had some time to digest and refresh all of the image in Adobe Bridge , I find myself getting exhort – melodic theme to steal ( I mean ‘ inspiration ’ ) seems to be everywhere in well design gardens , so as a will to the folks who are responsible for these beautiful plantings , here are a few of my favorite idea to slip for my own garden . Maybe you ’ll find them equally as inspiring and ‘ Pinteresting ’ .
1 . It ’s back – the Tuteur ( above persona ) , but with a prissy rose civilise on it .
What really makes this tuteur perfect is the climbing old - world style rose which , if you notice , is carefully trained onto it as a spiral . Lovely . No melodic theme what variety it is , perhaps a newer disease resistant hybrid such as aDavid Austin climbing rose ? That ’s what I am pass to get .

Teuteurs made a brief comeback in the 1990 ’s thanks to Martha , but for whatever reason , they quickly fell out of fashion again . Maybe it was because we really did n’t eff what to do with them – treating them as garden carving and not as a pragmatic equipment on which to coach plants ( i.e. “ tuteur ” , a defender , to train or teach ) . Sure you could find them anywhere still , but we love to make them . Here is ia majuscule way to make a fine tuteur – clickhere :
2 . Coppiced Catalpa in the Perennial Border
For some reason , we in the US rarely practice the art of coppiced trees , but in Europe the practice has , and still is used ( along with pollarding , which is often mix up with coppicing . ) . the RHS web site has a great tutorialhere , but it really does n’t ’ take much work to get these results in your own garden . Why coppice ? Well , it allows you to add a very interesting grain into mixed planting of either bush or perennials . Traditionally , it ’s use with willow ( genus Salix ) mintage , as a way to create ‘ water shoots ’ or long , whips of twigs used for basket weaving , as well as for fence , garden stakes and other use , but as an decorative pruning method , coppicing can sprain a tree into a statement – it play best with the traditional metal money , such as catalpa ( the okay yellow foliaged one above shows how glorious it can be ) , as well as traditionally used on Smoke Bush ( Cotinus ) , Limes ( Tilia ) and Foxglove Tree ( Powlonia ) , which in our garden has produced tremendous Jurassic Park – like leave .

basically , you just slue the branches back to the back just above the ground every wintertime , and new shoots will emerge mold sort - of a bush , but with an effect which produce magnanimous leaves , which some species produce when stimulated to bring out juvenile leafage . I love the effect , and can see why it was used for centuries for both pragmatic grounds ( weaving , nut trees , even to stimulate the development of truffles ) and as an ornamental handling . permit ’s play it back into panache !

3 . Individual Pots planted with Unusual Annuals – Mixed Containers are so 2014 .

We have become so accustomed to make interracial container , ( you know , a dark - pass on odorous white potato vine vine here , a calibrachoa there , a couple of coleus and mayhap a tumbling vine ) , but portable color make so much sense – especially if you desire something really unusual ( I ’m growing rare and very different nasturtiums in some containers ) . down ’em into the border , remove them when they are tired . Group some together , and move them around the garden .
The benefits are many , once you think about it , and to be honest , this is not a novel idea – Thallasa Crusoe the horticulture guru of the 1960 ’s and 1970 ’s promoted it , as did the late Christopher Lloyd who assembled curious grouping of tropicals , annuals , medulla and shrubs at his Great Dixter garden . For as one gage disappearance , it can be replace with either another pot with a unlike case of plant in it , or planting a undivided variety in one pot will allow you to raise some very interesting , if not rarefied excerpt which may only have a calendar week or two of peak blush . With the exemption to cluster tummy in hookup , in some way , you are create a much expectant collection but with the luxury to edit it through the summer .
4 . Clematis on a Stick

I ’ve mentioned this idea before , and I still have not added one to my garden , but planting a clematis on a stake , natural joint or pole ( even allow to tumble across a bush as they grow in the wilderness ) is SO much nicer than having one tie to a lamp mail service . Best of all , it allow you to plant it in your perennial garden , and not out on the lawn , or near any weedwacker . As for drainpipe pipe ? I save Akebia vine for that !
5 . Festuca weed underplanted with blue Allium azureum
So overnice , right ? It ’s often so disappointing when genus Allium foliage expire just before the plants gold rush , but this often undercooked treater ( wanton enough to receive in most declination Dutch bulbcatalogs ) has stayed out of my garden for no reason other than the fact that there are SO many good genus Allium to kindle , who could possibly acquire them all ? Well , now this one has been add up to my fall order . found under a mat of blue Festuca grass , made it even advantageously .

6 . A lavender Border to go for
OK , we have this demise strip along our route , were nothing mature – even grass wo n’t develop . This 200 foot by 6 foot all-encompassing stretch has a spicy , stone wall on one side , and faces south . For some grounds , a lone lavender plant does fly high right on the curb – am I stupid or just ignorant ? Hello lavender border .
Now , of course of study , in New England , lavender is dispute to say the least , but with many of these ironical - bed sunshine bread maker , micro climates exist , you just need to take care for them . SO I am ordering about ten varieties fromGoodwin Creek Gardens , who carry nearly 30 or more sort – many of which I saw in this hot and cheery border at Wave Hill . It will be a test , but with crushed rock as a mulch , I can see this working for me .

9 . flora lots of perennials in group – best for loudness , grain and quantity .
I say it far too many fourth dimension , but I admit that it ’s sometimes strong to do , as works are expensive , particularly perennials , and really – who need to buy 8 Lamb ’s ear on one sojourn to the garden center in saltation ? But if you think like a garden designer , or an estate nurseryman in England , than this is exactly what you must do . The next sentence you visit a botanical garden , and while you are photographing their gardens , take bill on how they engraft everything – enumerate the plants , and see for yourself how the experts do it . No demand to employ a fancy landscape architect who has a plantspersom making planting lists for them – you may do it yourself .
10 . Interesting Tender and Hardy flora in Containers and tubs

There is something one sees in most every plant persons garden , and that is pot and tubbed specimen plant ( you know , like those you ’ve see around my Martin House so many times ) . works people seem to often have the same preference , and many of these taste have lastly influenced the big box memory and rosehip nurseries to sell some of their ( our ) deary must - haves like uneven salvias , elephantine Alocasia and Colocasia ( the Elephant Ears ) you get laid , you are see them everywhere today , which is great , but there are still some flora which a few of us overlook . Here are a few I ’ve been intending to add to my collection , which I might add this year .
