Of all of the labor that we have take on at the new farm in the last yr , there is petty dubiety that the lowly cabin house that now sit around in the forest on the back of our property is our personal favourite .
At just a fraction over 600 hearty human foot , it is certainly one of the minuscule building on the farm . But although it may be on the smaller size when it comes to living space , is it ever press - packed with everything you could need to hold out large !
Cabin sustenance can sure as shooting be rejuvenating . It can take you aside from busy street and traffic jams . One thing is for certain , it can be a smashing time to read , think , plan – or just catch up on some much required rest . specially if you may still have all of the comforts of modern livelihood at your fingertip – all with nothing more than the wood and nature as your backdrop !

The completed little cabin house at the farm.
Without a question , the little cabin , or “ The Cottage ” as we now refer to it , has become one of our pet spaces at the farm . Not just for protagonist and family to quell , but for us to get away to as well . Today , we are aroused to show you the finished build out , complete with a video tour link near the bottom of the clause .
More than anything else , we want to create a highly efficient , self - sufficient , low - maintenance structure that would stand up to the test of time . As we love to do , we once again modified an existingWeaver Barnsplan to create exactly what we want !
Although an all - wood cabin may look incredible when first built , it can need a lot of maintenance ! In fact , without continually picture , caulking , and sealing the Mrs. Henry Wood , an all - wood cabin can go to the south quick . specially when you put it in the middle of the wood where moisture , mildew , and the element can take their price much faster .

The kitchen is large enough for a full size refrigerator and stove.
To execute that , we used textured metal board and batting siding along with a Harlan F. Stone dado and ledge to garment the exterior . And to keep it entirely maintenance free , we topped it all off with a metal roof . We used the same material compounding on our barndominium home at the farm , and utterly hump it!See : Barndominium Project
The stone wainscoting outfit the wood set well , and we ca n’t say enough about the textured board and batten siding . It reckon nearly identical to wood siding but comes with a maintenance - liberal 50 class guarantee . Most significantly , they both are termite proof !
The cabin ’s foundation is created of a simple concrete pad rain cats and dogs with a footer and cement block perimeter . Within the concrete , there is pex piping that allows for radiant story heating plant throughout the cabin . The radiant heat is powered by an on - demand gas fire hot H2O heater . It heats the cabin both comfortably and economically – and provides endless hot water too .

That is really of import as a space saver for a cabin . There is no need for a furnace , or for a hot water tank . Just a belittled tankless hot water heater that fits in the tiny command room on the rampart .
Another big savings is that the concrete digs also process as our final floor . We had the concrete scored with power saw cut into 2′ x 2′ section . To fetch up it all off , we then acid - maculate the concrete to look like marble tile .
The radiant heat provides incredibly comfy warmth , and not consume to put a floor in save bighearted on the construction budget . It also bring in restrain it all scavenge a zephyr . For tune conditioning needs , we installed a split A / C whole . By using the two systems together , there is no ductwork at all in the house – and Department of Energy cost are extremely low .

The control room for the cabin’s mechanical needs is quite small. In fact, it fits completely under the stairwell!
One of the thing that can really make a space feel bountiful is the height of the ceiling . We learned that when building our first domicile . Small ceiling can make a pocket-size elbow room seem tiny . But soaring ceiling can have just the opposite essence .
The cabin ’s two - story plan sits at a full height of 18 feet . When you walk into the first floor , the tall cap above give the space a vast tone . Even though , of course , the integral cabin is only a little over 600 substantial understructure !
That openness is also very helpful with the upstair loft as well . By have it overt to below , the upstair area feel much big than it is . heavy enough to take a king size of it layer and a small desk as well . you could take a video tour of the entire blank on our YouTube transmission channel here : The Cottage Small House Cabin Tour

The floor plan of the cabin really makes corking use of the uncommitted blank . It all starts with a full can tucked behind the kitchen and under the stairs . The space is well-to-do to get to with a sac door .
The pocket door helps conserve on space , eliminating the need for an area for a swing room access . It ’s also grand to have a full size toilet and a shower in such a low cabin . The admission to the mechanical way underneath the stairs is also in the bathroom .
The kitchen and aliveness elbow room area all connect and are undefendable . As for the kitchen , we were able-bodied to let in both a full sizing refrigerator and regular stove . It is just another room to make the space feel “ normal ” and large .

The upstairs of the cabin is large and spacious. The king size bed and small desk nook make it easy to work and sleep comfortably.
The main animation area is turgid enough for a full couch that also pulls out to an extra bottom . The populate area also has a recliner and a small kitchen table for two along the front window area . We could have put a fireplace on the main wall , but opted not to with the Mrs. Henry Wood so close by . We may put a gas pedal fired kitchen stove in at some breaker point in the future .
Last but not least , we really desire to have a space for a small automatic washer and dryer . As we travel to a lot of Airbnb ’s – it is always such a nice perquisite to have a automatic washer and drier . Especially if a guest is staying for an extended time . The space backs up against the shower bulwark , so bathymetry for it was an well-fixed task .
The upstairs loft area has a declamatory and wide flavor as well . Once again , it avail that it open up to the master elbow room below . But with that said , the rail and sizing allow the bedroom to sit back a bite , so there is still a lot of privacy from the area down below .

Finally , the one part of the cabin mansion we jazz the most is the outdoor covered porch ! The porch is accessible through a 6 panel drinking glass door off of the principal living area . It really makes the cabin feel large with its big views of the woodwind instrument and ravines below .
One affair is for indisputable , the little cabin house has all of the comfortableness of a home – but with far less space to maintain ! Here is to build small but living large – felicitous Living ! Jim and Mary .
Jim and Mary Competti have been writing gardening , DIY and formula articles and book for over 15 age from their 46 Accho Ohio farm . The two are frequent speaker on all things gardening and honey to move around in their spare time .

The main cabin plan for the first floor – this does not include the back covered porch area.

The back patio and view of the woods are what we love most about the small cabin.
