Now , it ’s up to you to serve them stay fresh longer , as they make the trip-up from bush to the vase . According to Michael Marriott , technical theatre director of David Austin Roses of Albrighton , UK , there are several ways to lengthen the vase life of shortened efflorescence , specially roses , beginning with how you cut them . “ For cutting undivided roses or clusters of blooming , prefer estimable - quality garden scissors hold or , advantageously yet , hand trimmer with sharp blades , ” says Marriott . “ The idea is to cut the stems neatly without compressing their water uptake channel . Their ability to take up plentitude of water is the key to observe them fresh . ” Good cutting tools , he insist , are not a place to skimp . Higher quality tools have shrill thin out edges that stay sharp longer , and often worn part and blade can be replaced . For cutting blossom and light deadheading , he expend a little bridge player pruner — or secateur , as they ’re known in England . His personal favorite is Felco ’s # 6 bypass pruner , a first choice of many florists , with a small cut header that reaches easily into dense Bush . “ They ’re quite little , and gibe well in a pocket . I keep mine on me all the metre so it ’s handy for write out flowers and for quick maintenance too . If you favour a hand pruner specifically for cutting roses , he suggest , look for one with a “ cut and defy ” feature film that makes it easiest to retrieve stems once you ’ve slew them . ”
