I like growing tomato . I like the smell of the foliage , the one-year rite of sowing , potting on , constructing a keep frame , the whole whole kit and boodle . Best of all , of course , is the harvest . GYO tomatoes are a whole different deal to shop - bribe – more flavoursome , scented , freshman , more bite , well in every style . I normally originate outdoors in a cheery spot on the terrace , reasonably sheltered and penny-pinching to the back door for ease of tearing and harvest . BUT – I always get hit by later blight , dominant in the area . commonly this at least has the decency to wait until I ’ve had a worthwhile harvest . Last yr it move just after going on holiday , we came back home toscenes of devastationhaving reap barely any fruit . All very uncheerful . At the time I swore I would never vex growing Lycopersicon esculentum again . That lasted about a week , after which I picked myself up and start to recall about what I would do differently . I could :

I opted for the last of those three options . I will be growing all my tomatoes in the greenhouse this year . This will limit the number of flora I can grow but I will wedge in as many as I can , allowing for air flow and so on , not to mention leave some room for my other indoor crop – chili pepper .

This year I am produce the keep up varieties of tomato :

Although I am grow in the glasshouse with the design of avoiding blight , I am also trying to get time on my side . I ’ve started them all quite early , risking legginess and failing in commutation for an earlier crop . Hopefully . The Sungold were inseminate on fifth January , pricked out three weeks afterwards on 26th January , and are growing on quite nicely . This is really early , but they have been squirrel away in the heated up bench throughout .

The biggest issue with seed early is promiscuous - levels . I would ideally have a grow - light to ensure they were getting the necessary light . Now that they are growing on , the days are also lengthen so this is becoming less and less important . The proficient newsworthiness is that leggy tomato plant can just be potted on cryptical , with the long stems buried as much as potential . love apple plant will produce new root from the stem if swallow up , which should result in stronger flora and ultimately more fruit . I will finally pot them up into the big pots I can get my hands on , at least 10 litres . big smoke means less lachrymation , they dry out more slowly .

There are those that say we should all wait until , say , late March before sow love apple , that those will catch up to and even do better than other sowings . I know in my bones they are probably right . My rush is partially impatience , I squeal , but mainly to get ahead of the dreaded blight . I might well do a little test sowing later on in March to see if they do easily .

The others were all sow on twenty-sixth January , still quite early for tomatoes . I have pricked out the Roma , Gardener ’s Delight and Tumbling Bella , the eternal rest are germinating happily but not yet in sufficient numbers to prick out . The Tumbling Bella are fromSuttons , as the name intimate they are suitable for containers or baskets . I project to produce on staging in the greenhouse and let them , well , tumble .

I ’ll be back in a calendar month or so with a tomato - flavoured update .
