In a style , it ’s comical that a simple , common , disposable item such as a pallet could be responsible for for creating so much at our slight farm . To most , palette are nothing more than a few spell of harsh - sawn wood , assembled together to supply a static infrastructure for safely shipping items around the human beings . For us , however , they were the inexpensive construction blocks – and paved the way for us to actualise the dreaming of creating our farm .
When we first started out – we made a hope to one another that no matter what – we would build the farm on a zero - debt premise . We wanted to simplify our life story , not perplex it – and it just did n’t make sentiency to do that by going in debt to build chicken coops , b and more . We are both very proud that we have held completely true to that hope – and pallet have played a big part in that !
In fact , the first two structure at the farm – the chicken hencoop and compost bins were built almost only from pallet for free ! And from there – it just sort of snowballed .

What it really lends accuracy to is that where there is a will – there is a way .
So before the winter ends it frozen lock on our garden , and the chore list starts to get on – we thought we would take this Sunday update to look back at how pallets have play a lively role in the edifice of Old World Garden Farms .
The Chicken Coop:(See : Building Our Original Coop )

Our chicken coop was the very first “ building ” on the holding . We in reality created it in our driveway at home , and then hauled it out to the farm to house our very first muckle of chicken . We sided the intact building in shipping crate palette Natalie Wood – and used some of the longer crate boards for trimming it all out . At almost zero cost – it was a swell mode for us to forage into nurture poulet without bust the banking company ! This past year , as we enlarged the flock – we had to build a larger henhouse – but we are happy to say it was donate to a nearby farm , where it still hold glad chickens today !
The Compost Bins :( See : Building Compost Bins From Pallets )
Compost is a key ingredient to the success of our garden – and we started early on make our own in the forked compost bins we created from pallet wood . Untreated pallet wood is a great alternative for create the bins – the Sir Henry Joseph Wood of grade is devoid , and is rocky cut – which really allows it to stand up to the element . The bins have worked really well , and this retiring fountain , we added on a tertiary bin to make even more compost in the coming age .

Canning Cabinet:(See : dismiss Cabinet From Pallets )
When we take a billet to store all of the terminate goods from the garden – we turned to pallet once again ! Made from simple transport crate pallet board , the canning cabinet ( also picture at the top ) , holds around 200 jounce of garden good . It ’s the pure sizing to store a year ’s worth of food for thought for our family . It remains to this day the most view DIY berth on our website , and in fact , after so many take , we finally put the stark architectural plan for the pantry on ourEtsy shop .
The Mailbox:(See : Mailbox From Pallets )

The mailbox project was truly one of essential . We realized that masses were starting to send mail to the farm – and we needed something immediate for the letter carrier to put it in ! So why not make one of pallets ?
This remain one of my favorite projects of all time – especially since the intact mailbox ( minus the post ) was made from just a exclusive palette . It has held up exceedingly well , and still stands strong today – giving a small ask in clue at the entrance to all of the pallet projects that have become such a part of our farm .
Straw Bale Planters:(See : Building A Straw Bale Crate From Pallets )

For us , the chaff bale palette planter add a plenty of interest , beauty and output to our garden – but they can also be a peachy way for those that are space or land dispute to arise their own veg . We retrace them completely from pallet instrument panel – and designed them to hold a single straw bale that you can then plant it . We used them last yr as an surplus elevate space to grow cucumbers and zucchini
Garden Markers–(See : Garden Markers From Pallets )
As we set out to originate more potpourri and run-in of veg – we commence to realise we needed some type of markers for the plants – and pallets come to the rescue again ! We make the garden markers from one-time remnant of barn woods and palette – and the project ended up being one of our top “ How - To ” post of last yr . Without fail – it is normally one of the first affair visitors notice and expect about when they walk through the garden – and we made them for free !

The Wine Rack :( See : Wine Rack From Pallets )
So you might expect – how does the wine wrack fit in to a farm ? Well , hopefully – if the grape keep on growing , and our small vinery can grow and start producing a goodish harvest time in the come class – we will need to build plenty more of these racks to store our home - made wine ! It was actually an easy shape – and using pallets stay fresh the material monetary value to a lower limit .
The list actually goes on and on – we ’ve used pallet to create shelving in the barn , front fencing material venire for the garden , and oh yes , we actually have a few in the b to sit extra stubble on . That ’s powerful – consider it or not – we actually employ a duet of pallets for their original intended enjoyment ! 🙂
