vegetables

The first half of the grow time of year is almost done . I still have n’t given much thought to the rest , except some vague notion of wintertime salad . closely all the useable ground has something imbed in it , the gloomy areas below . Just a few second power are empty awaiting something to plant . I have some seedlings on the go , various things , more on that to trace .

The weather has been foreign the last few week . After some decent give fair weather it has been gloomy and often very soaked . This has suited some matter , but mostly not so much .

Runner Beans – The runners ( leave behind side wigwam in the photo ) are doing ok , although they took a while to get going . I have planted a 2d slew so will have two wig - wams going . I ’ll be complaining about having too many soon .

rise beans – on the correct side in the photo above , these have been a letdown so far . I distrust the atmospheric condition has been too wet and cool for them . The first plenty are rather half - hearted , the 2nd batch never develop and the third muckle are just coming through now . I have also sown a caboodle more Gallic noodle , dwarf this time , for a former crop .

Squash – I ’ve imbed two ‘ crown prince ’ plant , both are looking a little punch damaged , but hopefully a bit of sunshine will perk up them up . I also planted three ‘ uchiki kuri ’ works near a act of trellis . I intend to train them vertically , it run quite well last year . They are rather squeezed in between some beetroot and onions , I hope they ’ll be happy enough .

Desperation sowing.

Courgettes – just two plants this twelvemonth , both ‘ ambassador ’ . Like the squash vine they are a short behind where I expected them to be , want of temperateness has probably held them back .

Salad leave of absence – a big disappointment this year . Between forget to crop and the teetotal ( until of late ) weather , near all the flora bolted . I sow a 2d batch that also bolted , some before I even planted them out ! The third batch was wiped out in the seed tray , slug the perpetrator . Must try harder ! I have sown a braggart fourth flock of unlike leaf crop . If I can keep the slugs away they should be harvestable in a few hebdomad time .

Onions – these ‘ sturon ’ stage set have all start to lean , I think due to being slightly shaded by the overhang Malus pumila tree diagram . Hopefully they will still crop ok .

Garlic – cheeseparing to harvest clip now for these . I am tempted to repeal them now but regret that last year . There ’s no hurry . OK OK I confess , I did repeal one bulb , it ’s on the minor side , so will leave them be for a few more weeks .

pea – it ’s a bit of a crazy mess but they are cut back . I hire a small harvest time of ‘ kelvedon wonder ’ as mangetout but have left the rest to pod up , same with the ‘ oregon sugar pod ’ .

Rhubarb – my single crown is going well this class . We have taken 2 or 3 lots of theme of and since withdraw this picture we have taken another crop , bequeath just one or two stanch to fertilise the plant .

Desperation sowing.

Carrots – ah , carrots . My pointy orange nemesis continues to tease . The first batch germinated jolly well . Not 100 % but not bad compared to my past efforts . The 2d batch faired less well , but again some have come through . I inseminate a tertiary batch in a wooden box which previously had tulips in . I have sow three rows and will thin out fitly . Some have germinated , but spottily so far . I am hopeful that I will at least have some carrots suitable of the name this twelvemonth .

Parsnips – patchy germination but emphatically some parsnips there . Enough for christmas lunch perhaps .

Sweet peas – rubbish this yr , I really do n’t know why . They are beginning to bloom , and some of the works are growing quite vigorously but compare to last twelvemonth they are passably miserable . Perhaps they just got a lot more sunlight last yr . beware you , they were not specially respectable looking when I planted them out , very bedraggled . I will keep this October ’s sowings in the glasshouse until next outpouring , I cogitate .

Crown Prince, looking a little anaemic

beet – I ’ve implant some in the ground and some in raft . None of them is looking peculiarly healthy to be honest , although some nice raw leaves are fare through .

murphy – Earlies . The first earlies , ‘ blood-red duke of york ’ , are nearly ready to reap . I ’m leaving them till the end of the month . The second earlies , ‘ Queen City ’ still look very robust in the leaf department , they ’ll be a while yet .

Potatoes – Mains . One liberation of the ‘ desirees ’ is not doing anything , dunno why . The others are doing ok , I think . It ’ll be September before those are harvest so I shall chiefly neglect them for now .

Tomatoes – I have dispensed with the heath Edward Goldenberg Robinson watering organisation this yr , I am rely on my own memory to water and feed this this yr . I just have to figure out what I ’ll do while on vacation . The plants all seem to be doing well , they have mostly topped their 4′ canes , now I am twiddling them around the string which will take them up to the solar apex of the nursery roof . There are bloom , so hopefully fruit will not be far behind . My labelling has gone awry so I ’ll be guessing which they are when I see the love apple .

Chillies – also going well this year , despite the cool , wet atmospheric condition . I think they benefited from a month or two in the heated and illuminated propagator I got for my birthday . They have been in the greenhouse for a while now , potted up into 3L pots . The two plants I winter are now doing OK , plagued though they were by aphids when indoors . The best chillies so far are on the overwintered ‘ Magyar hot wax ’ but there are many others coming through . With a spot of luck ( and cheer ) I conceive I will have a much better crop than last year .

I think that ’s the end of the secret plan tour for this month . How is your veg growing so far this class ?
