“ Um … why would you till it in ? Crimp it or chop and neglect it , no problem . ”
My response :
“ Depends on your goal . If you want more nitrogen in the filth for the next craw , till it under at the proper fourth dimension . If you want a carbon copy mulch , chop it and leave it on the surface . You lose a band of nitrogen with the latter . ”

“ Why would you till it in ? frizzle it or chop and drop it , no job . ”
substantially !
My interior editor in chief greatly dislike sentences set out with “ um … ” I am grateful , however , that you did n’t put an “ lol ” at the end . That would be way worse .
But I digress .
On cover crop , I am no expert . But I do screw it ’s not a subject of right or wrong in the suit of till vs. mowing . It ’s what you require the covering cropforand how you would like to manage your garden .
As Grow Organic writes ina scant article on cover cropping :
( quote )
The three independent method of issue down cover charge crop are : undercutting , mowing and roll . Undercutting is when you draw a steel under the soil and you slice the binding craw underneath the soil . For mowing you ’re going to mow down the harvest with your lawn mower a green goddess whacker , or a scythe . This chop the craw up pretty fine and it will decompose rapidly . pealing is fundamentally run your tiller over the plants with the tine turned off . However , this may not always toss off the industrial plant and thus not decompose .
( end quote )
I sleep together chop and pearl . That is my normal method . However , I have also read a good bit on incorporating crop instantly into the footing via tillage to speedily build organic matter while holding nitrogen in the soil for the next crop . Tilling is very soft for me right now as I have access code to a tractor . In Grenada , I only grow chop and drop as tillage was very difficult to do .
If you need , you’re able to even permit Secale cereale grow to maturity , then mow it and harvest the grain . The copiousness of remain straw can then be used as mulch or compost .
Yet tilling it under earlier when green – or mowing it and planting in the stubble – allows you to get your bound crop growing in a timely matter .
Just retrieve about your gardening destination and go from there . It ’s not an either / or .
As Dan S. write recently on a former post dealing with green manure :
“ Some people , still locked into only one way to do thing rather than looking for the most appropriate fashion to get matter done NOW . If it ’s not wood chips purists , it ’s compost purists ! ”
I all check . We have lots of pick in our instrument kit .
